City of Oceanside logoOceanside City Manager Jonathan Borrego will depart on December 18, concluding more than nine years of service to our community and a career that advanced from Department Director to the City’s top administrative position. Borrego was recently named as the finalist for the City of Anaheim City Manager position. Anaheim’s City Council is expected to consider a proposed employment agreement for Borrego on Tuesday, November 10.

Borrego joined Oceanside in September 2017 as Development Services Director. He was promoted to Deputy City Manager in 2019, and was unanimously appointed City Manager in August 2022.

During his tenure as City Manager, Oceanside advanced its Onward Oceanside General Plan Update, opened the Pure Water facility, strengthened affordable housing provisions, launched the HEART team to enhance homelessness outreach services, and facilitated the successful opening of the Seabird and Mission Pacific Resort Hotels, all while continuing its commitment to balanced budgets and responsible financial management.

Borrego states, “Oceanside is a proud community with deep history and its community members are very much engaged in civic affairs.  Residents here show up, speak up, and have high expectations of the City’s elected and appointed leaders. I’m proud to say that the City’s leadership lives up to these expectations and recent resident polls suggest that the overwhelming majority of residents are either satisfied or very satisfied with the level of service they receive. Such opinions are a reflection of the hard work and dedication that staff and our City Council provide every day. Leaving is a hard decision, and I’ll be forever grateful that I was afforded the opportunity to support the City and its residents during such a dynamic time in Oceanside’s history.”

“Under his leadership, Oceanside opened and expanded its first homeless shelter, preserved the historic Americanization School for use by the Crown Heights neighborhood as a community center, launched the innovative RE:BEACH project, completed the Fire Station 1 reconstruction, and advanced designs for a new park at El Corazon,” said Mayor Esther Sanchez. “He leaves the City with a strong leadership team, and residents can expect services to continue without interruption. The City Council is grateful for his service.”

The Oceanside City Council will be scheduling a closed session meeting to discuss appointment of an interim City Manager. The City anticipates conducting a national recruitment for a permanent City Manager.
