The city of Coachella issued checks totaling $23,000 to a city worker to buy Christmas gifts and to pay for a holiday party for city employees, with no oversight on how it was spent.

A new audit of the city’s finances, portions of which were obtained by The Desert Sun, describes a lack of internal controls and oversight in the disbursement of hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxpayer money.


In the case of the Christmas party, an employee put in two check requests – $13,000 to buy toys for a giveaway to children and $9,350 for gifts and a holiday party for city workers – and received them without providing any documentation.
