Master Your Role as an Effective Elected Official & Community Leader During This Time of Uncertainty with the Institute for Local Government’s New Level Up Your Leadership Training
In times of crisis, people often turn to their community leaders for guidance and support. That leader may be a spiritual guide, a community advocate, or an elected official. After more than a year and a half of crisis response, local leaders are grappling with increased pressure, burnout, and fatigue on top of the ongoing challenges of effectively and efficiently running our local agencies. During this time of uncertainty, local government leaders have the unique opportunity to rise to the challenge of being that role model for the communities they serve. But effective leadership is no small task. It requires diligence, integrity, and a deep understanding of good governance.
But these are very difficult skills to master, and especially challenging during times of increased partisanship, polarization, and civil unrest. Many councils, boards and governing bodies are struggling to work together effectively and lead collaboratively.
The Institute for Local Government (ILG) knows that California’s local government leaders must navigate many complex issues and evolving challenges. The post-pandemic recovery will require local leaders to address significant challenges and make difficult decisions about how best to allocate scarce resources and prioritize, or reprioritize, local initiatives. Local agencies cannot effectively address such challenges without a strong foundation of good government — trust, accountability, responsiveness and transparency. That foundation is threatened when leaders aren’t able to work together in a collaborative way.
Now is the ideal time to ensure that your agency’s foundation is solid. One of the ways to do this is through trainings like ILG’s new “Level Up Your Leadership” virtual training exclusively designed for elected and appointed local government leaders.
This interactive training will help participants master the art of public service by equipping them with practical tools and strategies to govern more effectively and better engage with their fellow electeds, agency staff and the community.
Through this training, attendees will:
- Understand key attributes of high-performing councils and boards,
- Gain practical tools to govern more effectively,
- Learn strategies and techniques to help your agency develop an exceptional council or board,
- Gather effective techniques for public meetings,
- Learn strategies to promote civility and respond to diverse viewpoints,
- Understand various roles and responsibilities of the governing body, your agency’s administrator and staff,
- Explore community engagement strategies and collaborative decision-making processes,
- Share real-world experiences with other elected officials,
- Learn good governance tools and review examples of exceptional leadership, and
- Join a cohort of local leaders for peer-to-peer networking and mutual support.
“Level Up Your Leadership” will be held on two evenings: Monday, December 6 and Monday, December 13, from 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm.
