The Los Angeles Chargers announced today that it has selected El Segundo as the site of its new headquarters and state-of-the-art training facility.

The new facility is expected to be completed in Spring 2024 and is located at the intersection of El Segundo Boulevard and Nash Street, on a 14-acre site in El Segundo, just seven miles from SoFi Stadium, where the team plays its home games.

The Chargers will join the Los Angeles Lakers and the LA Kings, both headquartered in El Segundo. This makes El Segundo the only city in America to host the front offices and practice facilities of major league professional football, basketball, and hockey teams. Los Angeles Lakers CEO and Co-Owner Jeanie Buss and LA Kings President and Hockey Hall of Famer, Luc Robitaille, welcomed the Chargers in a press release issued today.

“El Segundo has a strong tradition of fostering game-changing innovation in business and technology, and City Council is thrilled that the Chargers selected our city for the team’s new headquarters and training facility. City Council looks forward to learning the details of the proposed project and listening to the community’s input,” said El Segundo Mayor Drew Boyles. “I believe El Segundo is the most important five square miles of Southern California’s economy, and this exciting project reinforces El Segundo’s legacy as a city of world champions – where big ideas take off.”

“When searching for a location to establish our hub of football and business operations, we didn’t leave a single stone unturned,” said Owner and Chair of the Board Dean Spanos. “This process played out for more than four years because we weren’t willing to settle. Good enough wasn’t going to cut it. We wanted great, and we finally found it,” Spanos noted in the Chargers press release.

Continental Development Corp. and Mar Ventures, Inc. submitted a development application to construct a proposed professional NFL football team headquarters office complex, training facility, and athletic fields. The proposed project includes a three-story main building, three full-sized practice fields, on-site parking, and a variety of other exciting uses.

“The proposed land use at this location will help City Council implement its vision to further diversify the local El Segundo economy,” shared El Segundo City Manager Scott Mitnick. “City staff has been working for several months with representatives from Continental Development Corp., Mar Ventures, Inc., and the Los Angeles Chargers to prepare this development application. City staff will submit recommendations to Planning Commission and City Council for their review.”

The Planning Commission and City Council will vote on required land use entitlements for this proposed development.  The project is scheduled to be considered by Planning Commission via a public hearing on November 18, 2021.  City Council will review Planning Commission’s recommendations through a separate public hearing on December 7, 2021, with a second reading anticipated to take place on December 21, 2021.

The Los Angeles Chargers plan to begin construction during 2022 and complete the project in time to move into their new El Segundo facility prior to the start of the 2024 NFL season.
