Starting April 1, the City of Irvine will implement an organics recycling program that aligns with California’s organic waste reduction law, Senate Bill 1383. This law, which was passed in 2016, requires California cities to reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfills by 75% by 2025.
Organic waste includes food waste, yard waste, and other materials that can be composted or used for energy production. SB 1383 aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by diverting organic waste from landfills, where it decomposes and produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
Irvine has been working toward compliance with SB 1383 for several years, and the City has developed a comprehensive plan to meet the law’s requirements. The plan includes outreach and education efforts to residents and businesses, as well as new infrastructure and programs to support organic waste diversion.
“We are excited to implement the organics recycling program in Irvine and do our part to reduce organic waste and greenhouse gas emissions,” said Mayor Farrah N. Khan. “This is an important step toward a more sustainable future, and we look forward to working with our community to make it a success.”
Beginning April 1, Irvine residents and businesses will be required to separate their organic waste from other waste streams and place it in designated containers for collection. The City’s waste hauler, Waste Management, will provide composting and food waste collection services for residents, and businesses will be required to arrange for their own organic waste collection.
