City of Redwood City logoAfter over 25 years of dedicated service to the City of Redwood City, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Director Chris Beth is retiring this week. The City extends its deepest gratitude to Chris for his outstanding commitment and contributions to our community.

To ensure continuity and effective leadership during this transition period, Derek Wolfgram has been appointed as the interim Parks, Recreation, and Community Services director. Wolfgram currently serves as the Library Services director and brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to community service to this new role.

“As we bid farewell to Chris and his remarkable legacy of service, we embark on a new chapter for the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department,” said City Manager Melissa Stevenson Diaz. “Derek’s appointment as interim director heralds a continuation of our commitment to excellence in serving the needs of Redwood City residents.”

Wolfgram is a seasoned manager and visionary leader who prioritizes community engagement and service delivery. His extensive experience in working with community organizations and championing staff development makes him well-suited to lead the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department during this interim period.

In his role as interim director, Derek will oversee an organizational assessment of the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department. This assessment will evaluate current services in light of evolving community needs. The Redwood City Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department enriches residents’ lives by providing recreational opportunities and maintaining parks and facilities. Additionally, it manages public spaces and oversees recreational activities, supporting various commissions and committees in community engagement efforts. More uniquely, Redwood City’s Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department also provides human services including homeless services, plus extensive community and regional events and cultural arts.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as the interim Parks, Recreation, and Community Services director,” said Derek Wolfgram. “I look forward to building upon the foundation Chris laid and working collaboratively with staff and community partners to ensure that the department continues to provide responsive and inclusive services to meet the needs of all residents.”

During Derek’s interim appointment, Division Manager for Customer Experience Sarah LaTorra will serve as the interim Library Services director.

These interim appointments are expected to continue through the end of the year.
