Derived from the Spanish term for “little hills,” Lomita was incorporated on June 30, 1964, with its foundations laid years earlier. Initially a small ranch house with a few buildings and dirt roads, the City became a settlement for people from across the United States. In the 1930s, Lomita earned the title of the “Celery Capital of the World.”

Sixty years later, Lomita stands as an exemplary friendly, safe and family-oriented small-town community in Southern California. With a population of just over 20,000, Lomita is a diverse community that continues to grow. The City is renowned for its quaint downtown, beautiful parks, the Lomita Railroad Museum and more, reflecting the spirit of a thriving community. According to a recent resident satisfaction survey, 87% of respondents rated Lomita as a good or excellent place to live, underscoring the City’s wide appeal.
