The City of American Canyon is proud to announce the promotion of Juan Gomez to Assistant City Manager, effective April 12. Gomez has served as Finance Director since January 2023 with additional responsibilities as Interim Assistant CIty Manager for the last six months.
“After a distinguished career serving a variety of cities and special districts, Juan first joined American Canyon as Finance Director nearly two-and-a-half years ago. Over the past six months, he has also served as our Interim Assistant City Manager,” said City Manager Jason Holley. “During that time, he demonstrated an unmatched combination of expertise and leadership, spearheading key efficiency initiatives while managing day-to-day operations. Juan is exceptionally well-suited for the broader leadership responsibilities of this role, and I am excited to see the continued impact of his work.”
As Assistant City Manager, Gomez will oversee citywide operations; foster partnerships with civic organizations, community groups, and intergovernmental agencies; provide strategic guidance on key initiatives and manage the City’s Human Resources, Information Technology, Labor Relations and Risk Management divisions. He will also continue to support the Finance Department alongside Jemelyn Cruz, who was recently promoted to Finance Director. His leadership will be instrumental in supporting the City’s continued growth and success.
“Serving as Finance Director has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and I’m proud of what our team has accomplished,” said Gomez. “I’m honored to now step into this broader leadership role and continue working with our talented staff and community to move American Canyon forward.”
During his tenure as Finance Director, Gomez led several major initiatives that strengthened the City’s financial operations and internal processes. He successfully updated key policies, including the Travel and Purchasing Policies, to improve efficiency and accountability citywide. He also oversaw the implementation of a new cloud-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, launching enhanced tools like Employee Self-Service to better support staff. Under his leadership, the City earned awards for excellence in financial reporting for both the FY2022 and FY2023 Annual Comprehensive Financial Reports (ACFRs) and presented two consecutive balanced General Fund budgets.
Gomez’s promotion underscores the City’s strong focus on building leadership from within and ensuring strong, stable management as American Canyon continues to grow.
Gomez brings more than 18 years of experience in government finance, having held previous positions with West County Wastewater, the cities of Fairfield and Pleasanton and Contra Costa Water District. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from California State University, East Bay and is a proud American Canyon resident.
