On May 20, 2025, the American Canyon City Council approved the 2040 General Plan Update. This milestone reflects five years of community-driven planning, technical analysis and thoughtful deliberation.
The 2040 General Plan Update will guide the City’s growth, land use and major policy direction for the next generation. “I’d like to thank the many residents, local businesses, labor organizations, community groups and staff who provided input, and the Planning Commission, the Parks and Community Services Commission, and the Open Space, Active Transportation and Sustainability Commission for their thorough review and recommendations,” said City Manager Jason Holley. “Our community’s combined voices have helped shape American Canyon’s future, and we invite all community members to stay involved as we move forward together.”
The General Plan serves as a guiding framework, establishing the City’s long-term vision and priorities. It provides a coordinated structure for specific elements including land use, housing, parks and recreation, mobility and transportation, community safety and environmental justice. Together, these sections guide decision-making and provide direction for future plans, projects and policies.
In early 2020, the City started the General Plan Update process to ensure the City grows according to current community needs and priorities. The process included extensive public participation through workshops, surveys and committee meetings. The adoption of the General Plan is not the end of community involvement; implementation will include ongoing opportunities for public input.
With the official adoption of the General Plan, staff can systematically implement its vision through tools such as Specific Plans, Zoning Ordinances and Design Guidelines.
The City will continue to track progress on key initiatives through annual reports and an implementation matrix to measure progress toward General Plan objectives. For more information on AmCan 2040, visit: www.AmericanCanyon.gov/
