Flag displays at public facilities symbolize history, culture and community values. Most agencies require formal approval to display an honorary flag in addition to the U.S., state and agency flags.
In July 2025, the Elk Grove City Council amended its flag policy to include the Wilton Rancheria Tribal Flag as part of the flags that can be displayed on City properties. The staff report, written by Femi Omotesho, Management Analyst I, emphasized the Wilton Rancheria’s historic ties to the Elk Grove area and the cultural significance of the tribal flag as a symbol of recognition and respect.
“Amending our flag policy demonstrates the City’s commitment to transparency and inclusivity,” said Femi. “The Wilton Rancheria Tribal Flag honors the tribe’s unique role in Sacramento County as the only federally recognized tribe. Flying their flag at City Hall serves as a meaningful and visible acknowledgment of their sovereignty and enduring importance to the community.”
The Wilton Rancheria Tribal Flag will fly year-round at City Hall. The City plans to install a new 25-foot flagpole next to the U.S. flag, lower in height and raise it during Native American Heritage Month, with a ceremony coordinated alongside tribal representatives.
