The City of Rancho Palos Verdes recently partnered with Tripepi Smith to develop a new, interactive land movement visualization tool to help residents better understand the complex geological shifts within the Portuguese Bend Landslide Complex. The tool allows users to navigate through over two years of historical landslide data in one centralized location on the City website.
Historically, the City shared land movement data through GPS surveying maps presented during City Council meetings. This new digital tool builds upon those efforts by introducing an interactive interface and intuitive color scheme, providing residents with an even more accessible way to track acceleration trends and historical data.
“Working with Tripepi Smith allowed us to turn technical data into a clear and meaningful story for our residents,” said City of Rancho Palos Verdes Senior Administrative Analyst Megan Barnes. “This heat map tool makes it easy for the community to see the trends affecting their neighborhoods. It’s a vital step forward in how we communicate about land movement.”
The Tripepi Smith project team was led by Director Alexis Gillam and Senior Business Analyst Peter Johnson with support from Creative Director Kevin Bostwick, Junior Graphic Designers Jenna Cousineau and Jessa Laboissonniere and Junior Business Analyst Paris Davis. Together, the team worked closely with the City and its geologist to design the tool and ensure the data was accurately represented and easily navigable for the public.
“We were proud to support the City of Rancho Palos Verdes in its ongoing efforts to monitor and mitigate the impacts of the Portuguese Bend Landslide Complex,” said Peter. “By creating a more intuitive mapping interface, the City is ensuring that critical geological data is not just available, but easily digestible and useful for the community.”
City staff, with support from Tripepi Smith, will continue to update the application with each new round of data collection, ensuring the community has the most current snapshots of land movement trends over time. The rollout of this tool is part of the City’s broader commitment to enhancing community engagement and transparency.
