City of Cupertino logoBuilding on its mission to support innovation, education, and collaboration, the City of Cupertino has launched an AI Enrichment Program for its workforce. The initiative is designed to ensure employees have the training to use emerging technologies in their day-to-day work, supporting more efficient operations and service delivery to the community.

The goal of the City’s AI Enrichment Program is to help employees use AI as a tool to support their work. By reducing time spent on routine tasks, employees can focus more on serving residents, solving problems, and delivering high quality service to the Cupertino community. Organization-wide training began this month, with all employees participating and completion expected by the end of September.

“Technology is evolving quickly, and as a Silicon Valley community, we have a responsibility to approach it thoughtfully and responsibly,” said City Manager Tina Kapoor. “This program is an investment in our staff, giving them the tools and guidance they need to use AI confidently in their work while continuing to deliver high-quality services to our community.”

As part of this effort, the City is formally adopting Microsoft Copilot as a secure, City-supported AI platform that operates within its existing systems and meets strong data protection standards.

The AI Enrichment Program is part of the City’s broader effort to explore practical applications of artificial intelligence that improve both internal operations and public services. Current and planned initiatives include an AI-powered planning assistant that helps staff navigate zoning and development regulations, a new resident AI chatbot that will improve access to City information and services, internal AI search tools that help employees quickly locate information across City records and resources, real-time translation technology that expands multilingual access to public meetings, and an AI-assisted accessibility solution that helps make public documents more accessible and supports ADA compliance. Together, these initiatives advance the City’s goals of improving accessibility, transparency, operational efficiency, and customer service while maintaining strong governance and data protection practices.
