Construction on the City of Palmdale’s Melville J. Courson Park Revitalization Project is scheduled to begin in July 2026, marking the start of a major renovation of the park grounds. During construction, the main park grounds will be closed to the public. Courson Pool will remain fully open and accessible during regular operating hours.
The $5.4 million revitalization project will bring new play opportunities, improved gathering spaces, upgraded landscaping and enhanced amenities to the park. Construction is expected to continue through September 2027.
The project is funded through the Community Revitalization Program, awarded in 2021, Measure AV funds, and a $4.5 million Proposition 68 State Parks Grant. The City has contracted with Zeco, Inc. to perform the construction work for the project.
“Melville J. Courson Park has served generations of Palmdale families, and this revitalization is about making sure it continues to be a place where our community can gather, play and make memories,” said Mayor Eric Ohlsen. “These improvements will create a more welcoming, accessible and enjoyable park experience for residents of all ages.”
Planned improvements include a new prefabricated restroom, an outdoor performance structure, custom metal shade structures, new accessible play equipment for children ages 5 to 12, and a challenge course for ages 13 and older. The existing play area for small children will remain in place. The project will also replace one-third of the turf area with drought-tolerant plants, helping create a more sustainable and water-efficient park. Landscaping and irrigation in the parking lot will also be upgraded.
“This project is a great example of how thoughtful investments in public spaces can improve daily life for our residents,” said Mayor Pro Tem Austin Bishop. “From shaded areas and accessible play equipment to drought-tolerant landscaping, these upgrades will make Courson Park more comfortable, inclusive and resilient for the community.”
Residents and businesses near Melville J. Courson Park should expect typical construction impacts, including noise, dust, odors and other temporary inconveniences. The City and contractor will work to minimize disruptions throughout the project.
