The City of Commerce is pleased to announce the appointment of Ernie Hernandez as the new City Manager, effective May 4, 2024.
Mr. Hernandez brings extensive experience in municipal leadership, with a career spanning more than two decades in city management and public service. He most recently served as City Manager for the City of Lynwood, where he provided steady leadership, operational oversight and assisted in organizational reorganization, revitalization, and transformation. Mr. Hernandez has a track record of addressing critical issues while implementing best practices and finding innovative ways to accomplish short term and long term goals.
“I am honored to serve as City Manager for the City of Commerce,” said Hernandez. “I look forward to working with the City Council, staff and residents to support the City’s priorities and to deliver responsive, effective local government.”
Prior to serving as Commerce City Manager, Mr. Hernandez served as City Manager of Hawaiian Gardens, Deputy City Manager for the City of Norwalk and Assistant City Manager for the City of South El Monte. Additionally, he held positions with the cities of Santa Ana and Long Beach. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills and a Master of Public Administration from California State University, Long Beach. Mr. Hernandez is also a veteran and infantryman of the United States Army.
Julian Lee will serve as acting City Manager in Lynwood until Mr. Hernandez reports for duty in May, ensuring continuity of leadership during the transition.
