City of Calabasas logoThe City of Calabasas is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a total of $865,530 in grant funding through the California Department of Transportation’s (Caltrans) Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). The funding, awarded under Cycle 11 in 2023 and Cycle 12 in 2025, will support vital infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing roadway safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

Under Cycle 11, the City received $152,370 to upgrade safety features at 12 signalized intersections, selected based on crash data and the City’s Local Roadway Safety Plan (LRSP). These improvements are designed to reduce collisions by installing advanced warning signs, high-visibility crosswalks and retro-reflective signal backplates on signal heads. Pedestrian push buttons will also be relocated to improve accessibility.

“These grant awards are a direct result of our City’s focus on proactive safety improvements,” said Mayor Peter Kraut. “With this support, we can move forward with meaningful upgrades that protect lives and improve daily travel for everyone who lives in or visits Calabasas.”

For Cycle 12, the City was awarded $713,160 to improve pedestrian safety and address roadway hazards. This funding includes upgrades to pedestrian crossings at 22 intersections, promoting safer, more accessible transportation for all residents. The grant also provides funding to install guardrail systems at three locations identified as frequent sites of run-off-road collisions. These guardrails will improve motorist protection and reduce the risk of severe accidents.

“The HSIP grants allow us to take meaningful steps toward making our roads safer and more accessible for everyone,” said Public Works Director Curtis Castle. “We’re grateful to Caltrans for their continued support and look forward to implementing these important improvements.”

The HSIP grant funding will support design, engineering and construction activities. All awarded funds are expected to be fully allocated by Fall 2026.
