The City of Calabasas received the 2025 Risk Management Award from the California Joint Powers Insurance Authority (California JPIA) in recognition of its Best Overall Performance in the Workers’ Compensation Program for municipal agencies without public safety exposure. The award recognizes Calabasas as one of more than 77 peer public agencies honored for leadership in risk management.

The Risk Management Awards are held annually to honor agencies that demonstrate outstanding excellence in claims handling, safety and employee training. California JPIA bases its selection on several indicators, including total claims performance, improvement over time trends, responsiveness to Loss Control Action Plan recommendations, academy program and training participation and participation in risk management activities.

The award affirms the City’s commitment to promoting workplace safety through prompt handling of claims, ongoing staff training, effective reporting and a strong culture of accountability.

“This is a testament to the professionalism and care our employees bring to their work on a daily basis,” said City Manager Kindon Meik. “We take pride in building a workplace culture that values safety, accountability and continuous improvement — not as policy, but as who we are as a City.”

California JPIA Chief Executive Officer Alexander Smith praised this year’s recipients for their leadership and dedication. “The Risk Management Awards reflect the effects of good governance and leadership,” said Smith. “Calabasas’ dedication to excellence is a model for all of our membership and for all public agencies in California.”

The City was recognized during the California JPIA’s Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors on July 23, 2025, in La Palma, at the California JPIA campus.
