While urban forests improve air quality, provide shade and beautify neighborhoods, neglected and overgrown trees can become serious safety and liability risks. Proactive tree maintenance is an essential service that keeps communities safe and thriving.

The City of Pico Rivera has approximately 12,500 street and parkway trees, according to its 2020 inventory. The City follows a regular trimming schedule, with each tree trimmed at least once every three years.

In August 2021, the City awarded West Coast Arborists a tree maintenance contract scheduled to expire in August 2026. In July 2026, city staff recommended a new three-year agreement with the company for up to $1,690,900.

The approved agreement includes tree trimming, removals and replacements, emergency response and arborist assessments. West Coast Arborists also offered to update the City’s tree inventory at no cost. The work is funded through the City’s Lighting and Landscaping Assessment District Fund.

Public Works Director Noe Negrete is overseeing the maintenance service implementation and ongoing management.

“Caring for our trees is year-round work. We need to keep up with regular trimming and have crews ready when a tree needs attention or an emergency comes up. We appreciate our partnership with West Coast Arborists and their willingness to work with us on the City’s needs. This agreement helps us continue that work, and the proposed inventory update would give us a clearer picture of the trees we have, including those planted since our last count, so we can better plan and budget for their care,” said Noe.
