The City of Hawthorne’s impressive roster of groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremonies continues in the third quarter of 2024. These projects, including park and building upgrades as well as roadway improvements, underscore Hawthorne’s ongoing growth and commitment to connectivity. Join us in celebrating these significant milestones that will shape our community’s future.

July

  1. Zela Davis Park – The Zela Davis Park project broke ground on July 23, and is undergoing significant upgrades, reflecting the City’s dedication to enhancing green spaces. Funded by the Clean California Local Grant Program and the Los Angeles Neighbor Land Trust, the project includes modern playground equipment, new restrooms, a half-court basketball area, a formal picnic area with benches, fitness equipment and 11,000 square feet of native landscaping. New fencing will also improve the park’s appearance and security. This initiative, which began with a groundbreaking ceremony on July 23, is part of a broader effort to revamp several city parks.   1. Dodgers Dreamfield – The City of Hawthorne is pleased to announce a significant upgrade to Jim Thorpe Park, set to begin on September 10 at 10 a.m. In collaboration with the Dodgers Dreamteam, this project will revitalize the park’s two-field complex located at 14100 Prairie Ave. Currently serving around 300 children each year, the park will see several key improvements. The upgraded field complex will be named after Dodgers all-star Clayton Kershaw, honoring his contributions to the sport and community. The project includes enlarging one field to accommodate high school play, raising the outfield fence, and refurbishing existing infrastructure. Upgrades will involve regrading the fields, installing a new infield mix and sod, and updating the fencing, scoreboards, foul poles, and dugouts. These enhancements are designed to improve safety and modernize the park’s amenities. This initiative reflects the City’s and the Dodgers Dreamteam’s dedication to advancing youth sports and providing a better playing environment for local athletes.

  2. Senior Center Rehabilitation – The City is excited to announce the upcoming groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the Hawthorne Senior Center at 3901 W El Segundo Blvd, scheduled for September 24 at 10 a.m. This project will add a new 10,000-square-foot second floor to the center, including new offices, multipurpose rooms for activities such as pottery, sewing and fitness, a billiards room and lounge spaces. The expansion will also feature a new patio with scenic views of the Memorial Center and Park. Additionally, first-floor renovations will significantly enhance the facility with upgraded landscaping, improved HVAC systems and new kitchen equipment, flooring and appliances. The project will modernize lighting, restrooms and administrative offices and introduce new stairways, an elevator and updated mechanical systems. With funding from the Budget Act of 2022, this comprehensive expansion is expected to be completed by June 2025, marking a significant enhancement to the Senior Center.

Spring 2025

  1. Moneta Garden Improvements -The groundbreaking for the Moneta Garden Improvements project is scheduled for March 2025. Funded by Measure M, this initiative will revitalize key streets through a comprehensive array of upgrades. These improvements will include regrading, curb and gutter adjustments, traffic signal enhancements, new traffic striping, and pothole repairs. Additional work will involve asphalt resurfacing, ADA ramp upgrades, new sidewalks and driveways, and storm drain installations. The completion of these upgrades is anticipated by spring 2025.

  2. City Hall Expansion and Civic Park – Hawthorne’s civic center will soon undergo a major transformation with the City Hall Expansion and Civic Park project. Scheduled to break ground in Spring 2025, this project will introduce a three-story expansion of City Hall, a 95,000-square-foot park, an underground parking structure and a paved plaza for public events. Additionally, the existing Bank of America building will be replaced by a new food hall, and a walking and jogging loop will be added for community use. Construction will begin in Spring 2025, supported by funding from the Multi Fund and Measure A. The project aims to boost community engagement and provide residents with enhanced recreational and civic amenities.
