As part of the Building Safety Division in the Community Development Department, the Associate Civil Engineer reports directly to the Chief Building Official. This position interprets and explains City requirements and policies to developers and contractors; designs and writes specifications for City projects; and reviews plans and associated calculations/specifications for building construction, improvement, changes of use and alterations for compliance with applicable building.
The City of Fairfield is seeking a motivated and technically skilled Associate Civil Engineer who thrives in a collaborative public service environment and demonstrates strong independent judgment. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can manage assignments with minimal supervision, prioritize competing deadlines, and confidently navigate complex development and infrastructure projects. This individual possesses strong analytical and communication skills, works proactively to identify solutions, and understands when to seek guidance or coordinate with colleagues to ensure high-quality outcomes without requiring constant direction or oversight.
Highly desirable candidates will have experience performing plan review and coordination for complex private development and public improvement projects, including interpreting and applying engineering standards, municipal codes, and applicable regulations. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, customer-service focused, and capable of building effective working relationships with internal staff, developers, consultants, and the public. QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering and possession of a current registration as a Civil Engineer in the State of California is required.
Experience: Three (3) years of professional civil/structural engineering experience in the review of plans and specifications and/ or the analysis and design of residential, commercial and industrial buildings is required. Supervisory experience is desirable.
License or Certifications:
- Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License is required. Possession of a valid equivalent is acceptable during the application process.
- Current registration as a civil engineer in the State of California is required.
- Registration as a structural engineer in the State of California is highly desirable.
- Possession of a valid ICC (International Code Council) Plans Examiner Certificate is highly desirable and required within one (1) year of hire date.
- Certification as a California CASp (Certified Access Specialist) is highly desirable.
